Theo is a social entrepreneur, a science communicator and a public speaker. He is the Founder and General Manager of SciCo, an international social enterprise aiming to make science simple and understandable to the public. He is also the Co-Founder of the “Athens”, “Thessaloniki” “Patras” and “Mediterranean” Science Festivals, “Mind the Lab”, the “School lab“, “TEDMED live Athens” and “Green Project“. He holds a PhD in Medical Genetics from Kings College London and his Post-Doctoral Research work was in hereditary cancer. In 2011 he was nominated by UNESCO Greece for the Kalinga Science Popularization Prize and in 2012 he trained with Al Gore to become one of the Climate Reality Project Ambassadors. Since 2013 he is the President of the Onassis Foundation Scholar’s Association. In February 2017 he won the British Council Alumni UK social Impact Award. He is the first Greek to become an Ashoka Fellow. Theo has travelled to 85 countries in six continents.

Giannis Papachristos

Giannis grew up in Ioannina. From a young age, he was the “strange” child, he loved to read and learn about the human body. This led him a few years later to study at the Technical University of Ioannina in the field of Biomedical Engineering. Since 2015 he has been in charge of Human Resources and trainer at AIESEC in 3 different countries. In 2018, after winning the national FameLab competition, he represented Greece in the global science communication competition. In the same year he created the TEDxMaviliSquare in Ioannina. Now, with TEDx Ioannina being the largest volunteer organization in Epirus, he is also at the helm of the Ioannina Science Festival. For him, the Ioannina Science Festival is a proof that when you manage to transform what you love into a form that can be understood by everyone, you have achieved something magical. He firmly believes in two things: that science is for everyone and that Santa Claus is real.

Dimitra Demertzi

Demertzi Dimitra has received her BSc. in Chemistry and at the moment is doing her internship in Astrochemistry, at the Origins of Life laboratory of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany. In her following steps, she hopes to combine the natural sciences, in order to contribute, with her own research, in the elucidation of the origins of life. When she is not in the lab, she enjoys spending her time learning new languages, reading literature, cultivating her creative side, spending time in nature and travelling. Moreover, it is important to say, that volunteering constitutes an integral part of her life and that she loves science communication, which she deems both a duty and an obligation of each and every scientist.

Artemis is a 22-year-old girl who lives in the exotic Ioannina city. She loves volleyball, psycology and her dream is to work as a criminologist, which is as a matter of fact a bit oxymoron in comparison with the her current university studies, in Archaeology, in the university of Ioannina.Since she was a child, she was very social and always cheerful. Everyone says that she is the heart and the soul of the party. Hardly would one see her in a sad mood and when that happens she prefers to be alone in a room, listening to relaxing music and having the lights down.Her basic features are that she is dynamic, reliable, hard working and always positive.On the other hand, her main disadvantage is that same times she feels laziness.Volunteering for her is a good chance to get away from her every day routine, although for her the coexistence with strangers isn’t a problem but something that will evolve her personality.

It all started on May Day 1998, when she came to life. From a young age, with an innate love for life,colors, flowers and aspirations towards the goal of doing her best to help the world become a better place.With the same motivation, several years later, she completed her studies at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Ioannina. Today, she is studying for a Master of Science in Medical Chemistry, at the University of Ioannina. In addition, her great love for volunteering has radically changed her life, with the Ioannina Science Festival satisfying her “thirst” to make science accessible to completely everyone and externalize its more “human” aspect. Last but not least, she believes that her loved ones, cats, kids and sunsets enlighten her life!

Areti Angeli

Areti, 21 years old (almost). She studies physics at the Unversity of Ioannina. At the same time, she is part of theatrical plays, and acting in general, for several years now. She has joined a lot of different sports and types of dance for more than 10 years. Nowadays she mostly deals with yoga, cause she lacks time for more than that. Other than that, parts of her daily routine are photography and drawing! Oh, and of course music, which is her forever partner on everything she does! She travels a lot, cooks a lot and studies a lot of books. She loves gardening and, at this point of her life, she attempts to learn russian. She’s an insanely cinephile! Hmmm…that’s all! She has been a part of the festival since last year! This year, it’s an honor for her to be Head of Content, surrounded by an awesome team, full of “meraki” and passion for work!

Theodora Koufou

Dora was born in 1998 in Rhodes, where she grew up. Ever since she can remember herself, she has read books on the functioning of the human body as well as science books where she was looking for answers about the natural phenomena that occur around us. Her curiosity led her in 2017 to be admitted by the Department of Chemistry of the University of Ioannina, where she is now a graduate student, in the field of Clinical and Medical Chemistry. What is certain is that she cannot live without music and dance. Volunteering came into her life from a very young age starting with environmental groups at school and continued at the Red Cross as a Samaritan woman, following her need to offer help in any way she could. She is a member of the Ioannina Science Festival since last year, as Head of Content and believes that one thing is for sure; when someone does something with love and devotion the result is always the best.

Born in 1999 in the city of Veria, where he grew up, Giannis from an early age, had recognized his inclination towards science. His participation in a scientific competition, combined with his love for the field of physics and his instinct led him to study physics at the University of Ioannina. From an early age he has been involved in chess, while in recent years he has been active in coaching and arbitration in this sport. Volunteering enters his life for the first time this year through the Ioannina Science Festival, which enables him help communicate science in a world that often distorts and falsifies it.

Alekos is a resident of the earth, since January, 2000. From a young age he showed signs of an explorer, as he was tearing apart electronics in order to see what’s inside of them, and that’s how the endless journey into the unknow began… He grew up in a neighborhood close to the nature although it didn’t take much to get fasinated by the world of Internet. It showed me a lot of new worlds and at the same time it helped me encounter my big loves; physics and computer science. At the moment, he studies at the Faculty of Computer Engineering and Informatics, “catching, once in a while, glimpses” of other science fields that he also likes. His goal is to contribute into making this world a better place with the help of science… that’s his dream. Finally, he considers social life as being the most important field that one has to “shine”. He has a deep love for science but he would prefer a failed career than a bad social life.

Vasiliki Sapountzi

She was born and raised in Florina and during the third year of junior high school she was tempted by the idea of becoming a biologist. She is now an undergraduate student at the Department of Biological Applications and Technologies in the University of Ioannina. Initially, she found Molecular Biology more appealing, but eventually she is into Conservation Biology. From an early age, she was fascinated by primates (chimpanzees, gorillas, monkeys), so if not a human, she would prefer to be a Pan troglodytes chimpanzee, although her personality could be more in line with that of a brown bear’s (Ursus arctos) … Her most important contribution to science up to now is her voluntary participation in a program concerning the brown bear’s diet in the Prespa basin area (yes, it is exactly what you think, the study was conducted by analyzing bear scats!). She is a procrastinator, but has very good organizational skills and she usually examines everything down to the last detail. Her anxiolytics are pastry-making and hiking.
